Dear Parents, Teachers, Students and after school facilitators,

I want to take this moment to offer a very special free program to you or your child or teen. Now starting it’s 8^th year, Kid’s Play Arts Ensemble and YouthSound our “rocking boys band is looking for new students. What is Kid’s Play and YouthSound???

An ensemble consisting of pre-teens and teens (ages 8-18) invited to participate in a year-long residency at Hope Center studios (1210 W. Clay, Ste. 26). Master teachers Chris Howard (music) and Gayla Miller (theater) Roberta Cortes (dance) Patrick Ferreri (yoga) will join Jane Weiner (dance) in teaching the students on a twice weekly basis. Students MUST attend both days in order to take part. The students will attend classes in these three fields each week, working more intimately in the artistic fields, under the guidance of these teachers. With this more in-depth study and immersion in the art, the students will then be able to create new pieces that reflect their level of learning.

A performance is scheduled for May 1, 2010. This performance will enhance the student’s self-esteem, by providing a positive seeking of self, guided by master teachers, and then a culmination of that work in a nurturing and supportive performance space thus creating a positive boost.

We are so pleased and excited to offer this opportunity to join KID’S PLAY 2009-2010!

Kids’ Market Day on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

Kid’s Market Day offers children of all ages the opportunity to see where their food really comes from. Students who have participated in Urban Harvest’s School and Youth gardening programs will bring their produce to sell at the farmers market. Vendors will bring animals and equipment from their farms to show kids what farming is really like. Kid-friendly activities will include seed planting, face painting, scavenger hunt, raw vegetable tasting and egg dyeing using natural colors. Live music and a cooking demonstration will also be featured.

The Bayou City Farmers Market is a project of Urban Harvest. Urban Harvest is a nonprofit organization that uses fruit, vegetable and habitat gardens to improve quality of life in the greater Houston area. These gardens serve to educate, strengthen community spirit, create therapeutic environments and provide food and income. We teach organic gardening techniques, help neighborhoods build successful community gardens, create outdoor classrooms at schools that teach core curricula, nutrition and respect for the environment, provide fresh, locally grown food, and encourage responsible land use. Our work benefits all of us by improving food, diet and health. It also builds engaging schools, neighborly communities, and valuable local businesses that together sustain and improve our environment. Our Bayou City Farmers Market helps educate the public about the benefits of eating local produce in season and provides the local agricultural community with a direct outlet for their products. The Bayou City Farmers’ Market is opened every Saturday throughout the year and offers locally-produced vegetables, fruits and farm products. The market supports family farms and boosts the local economy. Go Green this spring at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center’s Spring Break Camp. From roots to shoots, children at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center’s Spring Break Camp will dig deep into understanding plants and how they live, grow and eat. Kids can look forward to growing their very own plants, designing gardens, creating an edible display, dyeing a bandana with plant pigments and much more. Campers are guaranteed to take home plants and other unique projects.

The Arboretum has a long history of providing quality nature camp programs that use this 155-acre nature sanctuary as a living laboratory to explore nature and science. Canoe Trip on Buffalo Bayou

Enjoy a half-day trip down Buffalo Bayou and learn about the history of Houston's most unique natural asset. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, and includes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The focus of the trip is education and conservation and will include discussion of important conservation issues currently facing our Bayou. Trip leader will be guide Don Greene, an award-winning conservationist and educator. Trip starts at 1 p.m. and will conclude between 5 and 7 p.m. A mandatory orientation at the Arboretum is held on Thursday evening prior to the trip. Cost (includes all equipment): $85 for members; $105 for non-members.

Identifying Common Birds

Learn about common Houston-area birds and their habitats, and how the changing seasons affect the types of birds that are present. Class will include techniques to identify all common species, including by call, as well as ways to attract birds to your yard. Houston, Texas, Oct. 28, 2008- Art League Houston and Target are pleased to presentArtBound!, our newest initiative to promote family literacy and interaction through a series of fun workshops designed for parents and children, ages 5-12 years old. These free, hands-on workshops are taught by professional artists and are easily replicated at home.OUR FIRST ONSITE WORKSHOP IS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH.

Parents are required to attend and participate in the workshops with their children. Due to the format of the workshops, families are asked to arrive on time. Continental breakfast will be served promptly at 9:00 a.m., and once instruction begins, Art League Houston cannot admit latecomers.

For parents and children ages 5 - 8 years old

Artists Armando Rodriquez and Lisa Qualls team up to teach parents and their children how to bind and make their own beautiful book out of common household materials. Families will also experience the connection between visual arts and language as they create their own works of art. Storytelling is another component of this workshop. This workshop is being held in conjunction with Tête-á-Tête, an Art League Houston exhibition of works by artists Anila Quayyum Agha and Lisa Qualls. Participants will be able to view the exhibition during the workshop.

Armando Rodriquez, a graduate of the University of Houston, teaches printmaking and bookbinding at the Art League School. Lisa Qualls, the 2007 Artist in Residence at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, often uses text and pages from old books in her mixed media collages, drawings and sculptures. Art League staff will also be on hand to help facilitate what promises to be a creative, fun, and educational family workshop.

Artist Katy Heinlein will teach you how to cut out and sew animal characters from your own story, using materials that include felt, feathers, glitter and glue. This workshop is in conjunction with The Museum of Unnatural History, an exhibit that features artist Elaine Bradford and will be on view at Art League Houston from January 9 - February 20, 2009. Sculptor Katy Heinlein is the recipient of the 2007 William and Dorothy Yeck National Young Sculptors Purchase Award, and was awarded a 2005 Edward Albee Residency.

Our ArtBound! workshop series will conclude at the spring Bayou City Art Festival, March 27-29, 2009 at Memorial Park. Join Art League Houston in the Creative Zone for our final great literacy/art project!

This Saturday, November 1 from 11am-3pm, join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for "Hands-On Houston", a free craft-activity open house for the whole family on the first Saturday of every month. This month, in honor of their upcoming 3rd Annual "Texas Teapot Tournament", members of the Clay Arts Museum and Educational Organization (CAMEO) will lead children and adults in creating mini clay teapots using basic hand-building methods with air-dry clay. CAMEO will also demonstrate finishing techniques, such as stains, sgraffito, and incising. This activity is suitable for all ages and all materials will be provided.

Before or after the activity, get inspired by the beautiful ceramics and functional pottery in HCCC’s current exhibitions, "Warren MacKenzie: Legacy of an American Potter" and "Inspired: Students of Warren MacKenzie". This Sunday, October 12 from 1-4pm, join the Heritage Society for the Family Day: "Setting the Table: How Food Has Changed in America". This event will focus on food traditions and how our attitude towards food has changed over the centuries.

Families can explore the many aspects of the foods we eat as well as how we prepare and serve them by viewing the exhibit, “What’s Cookin? Two Hundred Years of American Foodways”. Visitors of all ages can try their hand at gadget games and food quizzes and there will be kid’s arts and crafts, including face painting and making pasta skeletons or macaroni necklaces. Texas Children’s Health Plan representatives will be on hand to present tips on nutrition and healthy eating for the entire family and there will be healthy refreshments to enjoy as well as kid-friendly recipes to take home.

10th annual Wild Things Youth Art Contest

CALL FOR ENTRY

10th annual Wild Things Youth Art Contest invites artists ages 5 to 18 to unleash their creativity and celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week. Each artist may submit only one entry, which must be original, recent, matted work and must not be computer generated. Artwork must be titled and may not be framed or have the entrant name or initials on front. The contest is part of the Wild Things festival to be held Oct. 18 at Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge in Lacombe. Participants are asked to capture on paper or canvas the native plants, animals and landscapes of the National Wildlife Refuges of Southeast Louisiana. All art will be displayed at the festival. Art will be judged in four age groups: 5-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18. Slidell Art League is seeking artists to color their world using only three colors. SAL's upcoming juried show, "Black and White with a Splash of Red" is open to local artists with all levels of expertise. There will be four categories of art to be eligible for awards. Those are: Art Under Glass; Art Not Under Glass; Photography; and Three Dimensional. Gift bags and ribbons will be presented in each of the categories for first-, second- and third-place winners as well as honorable mention. Artists should take the theme of the show into consideration when selecting their entries. Artists may submit their entries Oct. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m., and Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A reception and awards ceremony will be held Oct. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Slidell Art League Gallery, 1827 Front St., above the train depot. Judging this dramatic exhibit will be award-winning artist and designer Karen Larmeu Stakelum of Covington. This exhibit will be on display through Nov. 10. The humble origins of "found" instruments—from buckets to cereal boxes, tables, hands, and voices—is contrasted with the dazzling artistry with which they are played.

Dear Friends,
I could use your help to find a few MORE good kids!!! (Not that I don't have some awesome kids already!!) But my teen outreach programs has a few open spots and I wanted to be sure to get the information out so we can fill these last few spots.

What is Kid's Play You ask????
It is an arts outreach program for children ages 6-18 offered FREE at Hope Center (1210 West Clay, studio 26) We offer yoga, theater, music, dance, photography and creative writing. Many of our classes are closed but we have some classes that still have space. The following classes still have some openings. We work on a first come, first serve basis, so if you have an interested student please contact us ASAP.

Young Writers Workshop in the Park

The City's only open, free writing workshop for kids presented by Writers in the Schools in conjunction with HPL Express. Writers in the Schools (WITS) places poets

and writers to work with students from grades 2-12 every Saturday, from 10:30 -

11:30 AM, in FREE hour-long creative writing workshops. WITS engages children in

the pleasure and power of reading and writing. Our professional writers are dynamic instructors who bring passion and a practitioner's knowledge to the writing process. Learning how to write a story or compose a poem is one of the most meaningful educational experiences possible. For 24 years, the WITS program has played a key

role in the educational and emotional development of thousands of children in the Houston community. The workshop is limited to 15 participating students, and the students must arrive by 10:30 AM to participate.

MFAH SEEKS VOLUNTEER DOCENTS TO LEAD TOURS FOR YOUNG STUDENTS

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is now accepting applications for volunteer docents for its weekday and storytime programs. Weekday docents lead school tours for 3^rd and 4^th graders; storytime docents lead tours for pre-kindergarten through 2^nd grade students. Both give one tour each week from October through May, except for school holidays.

Application deadline is August 1, 2008; training will begin in September. To apply, contact the docent program office by email at docents@mfah.org or call 713-639-7858.

Qualifications: Enthusiasm about art and culture, and a desire to share that knowledge with others. Experience in art, education, or a related field is preferred, but not required. In-depth training is provided.

Duties: Lead one-hour tours for groups of 10 to 15 students. Conduct interactive discussions about works of art selected for each tour.

Benefits: The reward of enriching the lives of hundreds of visitors, invitations to special lectures and gallery sessions, continuing education at the museum, friendships with docent colleagues.

Summer Youth Conservation Corps CFL Bulb Giveaway

Take home a free energy efficient Compact Flourescent Light Bulb from a day in the park. The Mayor's Summer Youth Conservation Corps, in partnership with Houston Works, employed and trained youth to be energy conservation advocates. After weeks of visiting neighborhoods to distribute 250,000 bulbs, they will distribute the remaining bulbs to the public at Discovery Green. Distribution begins at 10 am and lasts until the last bulb is handed out.

DEVELOP YOUR KIDS' CURIOSITY WITH "FAMILY KIDS DAY" AT THE HOUSTON CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY (HCP).

It will be a fun photo-filled day this Saturday, June 21, from 1-4pm during "Family Day" at HCP located at 1441 West Alabama. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in bringing the current exhibitions to life. Based on the projects in the "PictureThis!" exhibition, kids will be able to create their own work of art to take home. Projects will include projected drawings, collage, cyanotypes, and a photo shoot.

"PictureThis!" is a collaborative program with The Children's Cancer Hospital at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston. Resulting in an exhibition of the students´ work in HCP's Learning Center gallery, the show successfully integrates photography into the Children's Cancer Hospital art curriculum. Initiated in 2002 by HCP, the"PictureThis!" program is 8 weeks in length. This year's projects included a Polaroid alphabet scavenger hunt, a Cyanotype project, Projected Drawings, Inspired Collages, Flip Books, and a Camera Obscura. Theexhibition continues through July 13. Beverages and snacks will be available for sale.

The American Robotics Academy® offers the most exciting "Robotics Program" going on in the Houston area, which includes “Lego Robotics”, “Crazy Action Contraptions” and “Robots on the Rampage”. Classes are divided by age and skills level and teach students to understand "how things work" through hands-on activities that demonstrate the principles of simple and motorized machines. They gain experience with design and problem solving through the use of gears, motors, wheels and axles, pulleys, and remote control devices.
